Cologne’s historic city centre

The Eden Hotel FRÜH am Dom is not only right next the cathedral, but is also the gateway to the historic city centre of Cologne, where a unique blend of shops, restaurants and public squares is waiting for you. Historic houses and narrow alleys create a unique historic feel and atmosphere. 

It is especially during the Cologne Carnival season that the historic city centre comes to live and numerous pubs invite the jesters to celebrate. But the Christmas markets in this old Cologne "Veedel" (quarter) are also very popular. Racecourse

A day at the racecourse in Cologne-Weidenpesch is a thrilling experience. The extensive grounds in the middle of the nature reserve are open throughout the day as well as on race days. Visit the FRÜH brewery "Em Tattersall" and enjoy authentic Cologne hospitality. The grounds are also used for weddings, markets, concerts and exhibitions. All race days can be found here. Rhine park

The large Rhine park between the Tanzbrunnen and the Zoobrücke bridge stretches along the banks of the Rhine. A huge adventure playground surrounded by benches, trees and plenty of grass offers space for fun and games. In case you are wondering about the rails in the Rheinpark: The narrow-gauge railroad built in 1957 for the Federal Garden Show actually still makes its rounds in the Rheinpark to this day. For train fans and children alike, the tour through the Rheinpark is great fun.

Chocolate Museum

Follow the cocoa's journey from harvest to transportation to the chocolate factory. You can then sample the smooth chocolate free of charge at the chocolate fountain. In addition to the entertaining exhibition and fascinating collection, the Chocolate Museum offers many workshops and tastings. Hohenzollern Bridge

The famous Hohenzollern Bridge is over 400 meters long. Opened in 1911, the bridge is crossed by around 1,200 trains every day and spans 168 meters across the Rhine. From the left side (Cologne Cathedral) to the right side of the Rhine, popularly known as the "Schääl Sick", you can enjoy a magnificent view of Cologne's sights such as the Crane Houses, the Old Town, Cologne Triangle, the Rhine Promenade and many more.

 

Navigation on the Rhine

"The Rhine, Germany's river, not Germany's border." This is how the poet Ernst Moritz Arndt described it. In the immediate vicinity of the Eden Hotel FRÜH am Dom lies this impressive river, which flows through the middle of Cologne and divides the city into two parts. Even the Romans used the waterway as a transportation route.

The Lindenthal animal park

The Lindenthal animal park is a popular excursion destination for people from the surrounding area. With over 250 animals such as donkeys, sheep and goats, the popular leisure facility is a natural experience for the whole family. Plan half a day for this, as the grounds are not that big. This beautiful leisure facility is run by a non-profit association. The people of Cologne have been supporting "their zoo" with donations for many generations. You can buy suitable food at the zoo and feed the animals. But beware: there are also fasting days for the animals on which they are not allowed to be fed. The Second hand markets in Cologne and the surrounding area are a fun way to pass the time. Rummage through the treasures of the people of Cologne and listen to the "Verzällcher" (German for entertainment). It's simply wonderful. You can find the current dates here.  

Cologne Zoo

With around 12,000 animals, Cologne Zoo offers animal fun for the whole family. Watch the funny meerkats or the impressive herd of elephants. With different feeding times, a large adventure playground, a varied gastronomic offer and special offers for the vacations, Cologne Zoo is worth a day trip with over 1 million visitors every year.

Cologne Trade Fair

The Cologne Trade Fair can be reached on foot in 15 minutes via the famous Hohenzollern Bridge with its love locks. A magnificent panorama with a view of the Kranhäuser, the old town and the promenade. The bridge spans 168 meters over the Rhine. The total length of the bridge is over 400 meters. On the way to the Cologne Trade Fair, you will pass the KölnTriangle tower, from where you can enjoy a fantastic all-round view of Cologne.

 

Odysseum

You should definitely not deprive your children of a visit to the Odysseum. In addition to changing exhibitions (be sure to buy tickets well in advance!), there is the museum with the mouse, the outdoor area Sonnengarten for splashing around and lingering, and a range of restaurants. The walk takes about 45 minutes, but is also easily accessible by public transport.

Cologne museums

In the immediate vicinity you will find numerous museums, such as the Museum Ludwig with modern art, the Cathedral Treasury and the Roman-Germanic Museum. Due to renovation work, the exhibits are currently located in the Belgisches Haus, Cacilienstrasse 46, near Neumarkt.

There is a lot to learn and discover in the Cologne City Museum. Since March 2024, the former Franz Sauer fashion house has been home to an unconventional and surprising journey through time from the Middle Ages to the present day. A stone's throw away is the Kolumba Art Museum. A new building in 2007 integrated the remains of the church of St. Kolumba, which was destroyed in the Second World War, and now combines two thousand years of Western culture in one building.
